When it comes to any type of pipe, roundness is essential. Deviations from a perfect circle, known as pipe ovality, can have serious repercussions on performance and the connection of joints and other parts. It is therefore crucial to conduct sufficient checks to ensure roundness has not been compromised.
To measure the ovality of a pipe, a caliper can be employed. With this tool, it’s possible to take several readings of the pipe’s diameter along the length of the piece – each figure calculated providing an accurate view of the pipe’s degree of ovality.
When it comes to calculating ovality in a pipe, a laser scanner offers improved accuracy when compared to a caliper. This special apparatus functions by scanning the entire length of the pipe in one go, providing the data necessary for producing a three-dimensional visualisation of the pipe – and hence granting access to more accurate ovality calculations.
Instead of laser scanning, X-ray computed tomography (CT) can be another way to inspect pipe ovality. Although pricier, the use of X-rays ensures more precise readings compared to light.
After determining the ovality of the pipe, a comparison to the satisfactory parameters for that pipe should be made. If the ovality does not align with the established criteria, the pipe needs to be remedied or substituted.
