CSST, otherwise known as Corrugated Stainless Steel Tube, is an important part of gas transportation. Born of two layers – an inner core of stainless steel and an exterior of corrugated metal – CSST is identifiable by its jet-black hue. To ensure successful installation, special fittings must be used to attach it to natural gas or propane supplies.
Since the 1980s in Europe, CSST has been used as a pipe system due to its advantages over other options; it was only introduced to the US in the 90s. Easily installed and lightweight, it requires no welding or threading. Furthermore, its safety benefits make it a superior choice for transporting gas: CSST is less likely to suffer from ruptures than alternative pipe types.
Although there are many benefits of utilizing Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST), there are a few drawbacks one must keep in mind. To begin, the cost of CSST is generally higher than other forms of pipe. In addition, users should note that it cannot be used with all gaseous materials. To properly employ CSST, one must ensure that it is utilized with a licensed gas line and matching fittings. Moreover, its use is not advised for propane or butane gas systems.
CSST technology has become a favorite for fueling many structures, particularly newer constructions. Estimates show that over one-tenth of new US dwellings are supplied with gas through CSST pipelines, and this system is increasingly appearing in commercial and industrial ventures.
